At one point, allergies used to turn me into a pill popper. I’m not being dramatic. Many years ago, before Allegra was available over the counter, I was desperate for relief. I would take a pill every time I sneezed.
Literally.
One sneeze.
Pop a pill.
Another sneeze? Another pill.
It wasn’t about misuse. It was about being miserable: The watery eyes, the raw nose, the constant congestion. I was tired and irritated.
But here’s where I got stuck in a situation…
After some time, I started noticing something odd and a bit painful.
While letting my body get rid of waste, I noticed something in the toilet.
Yep.
It was the pill.
Still fully intact.
At first, I thought it was a fluke. But it happened again. And again. It was like the medication never broke down at all. There I was, loading up on pills, but my symptoms stayed the same—and the pills seemed to just pass through. I wasn’t getting relief. I was just producing very expensive, undigested capsules.
Is It Just Me?
I thought I was imagining things. But after some research, I learned I wasn’t alone. It turns out, certain medications, especially if they’re coated or extended release, don’t always break down properly for everyone. Sometimes, they’re affected by how fast your digestive system works, or whether you’re taking other medicines. In my case, I suspect my body was just over it. It wasn’t absorbing anything. What I learned is that not all meds work the same for everyone. Just because something is prescribed, popular, or now sold over the counter doesn’t mean it’s right for you. Your body’s needs are different.
If you’ve ever felt like your meds are useless (or literally just passing through), you’re not crazy. And you’re not alone.
